Sport, citoyenneté et genre en Afrique de l’Ouest : histoire sociale et politique comparée de la jeunesse au Ghana et en Côte d’Ivoire au XXe siècle

This thesis explores an unprecedented aspect of postcolonial citizen training in West Africa during the twentieth century. It compares the making and unfolding of three sporting and physical activity infrastructures in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire and reveals how sports, youth movements and physical training have helped to build the social and political history of Ghanaian and Ivorian youths. The study shows how, in both countries, physical and sporting activities were used by colonial and postcolonial states to promote the formation of a young idealized citizen: athletic, urban, educated and loyal to the state. On the one hand, this research highlights the ambivalence at play within sporting practice, between subordination and emancipation. On the other hand, it illuminates how sporting and physical activities were instruments that contributed to the redefining and reinventing of gendered social identities. This thesis is based on archives collected in Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, France, Great-Britain, Switzerland and the USA and biographical interviews with forty former sportsmen and sportswomen in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.Ce travail explore une facette inédite de la formation citoyenne postcoloniale en Afrique de l’Ouest au XXe siècle. Ainsi, cette thèse propose de comparer la constitution et le déploiement de trois dispositifs d’activités physiques et sportives au Ghana et en Côte d’Ivoire. Il s’agit de comprendre la manière dont les sports, les mouvements de jeunesse et l’éducation physique ont participé à construire l’histoire sociale et politique des jeunesses ghanéennes et ivoiriennes. Cette étude montre comment dans les deux pays, les activités physiques et sportives ont été employées par les États coloniaux et postcoloniaux pour promouvoir la formation d’un jeune citoyen idéal : sportif, masculin, urbain, scolarisé et loyal à l’État. D’une part, cette recherche vise à mettre en évidence l’ambivalence qui se joue dans la pratique sportive, entre émancipation et subordination. D’autre part, il s’agit d’éclairer la manière dont les dispositifs d’activités physiques et sportives ont contribué à la définition et l’encadrement d’identités sexuées. Cette thèse s’appuie sur des archives récoltées au Ghana, en Côte d’Ivoire, au Sénégal, en France, en Grande-Bretagne, en Suisse et aux États-Unis et sur des entretiens biographiques réalisés auprès d’une quarantaine d’anciens sportifs ghanéens et ivoiriens
