Etude des verrous susceptibles de freiner le développement de l'utilisation de l'ozone en blanchiment des fibres cellulosiques

Production of paper grade pulp is still relying on the use of chlorine dioxide in ECF bleaching sequences in spite of the AOX pollutants this process releases in the environment and in paper products. The shift towards the use of TCF bleaching sequences will be necessary and is already made possible by the total substitution of chlorine dioxide for ozone, a greener and more powerful oxidant. It is shown in this thesis that an ozone TCF bleached pulp can reach brightness and strength properties equivalent to that of a conventional ECF pulp. Furthermore, a UV resonance Raman spectroscopy study demonstrates the superiority of ozone (associated with hydrogen peroxide) in stabilising the brightness, compared to the joint use of chlorine dioxide and peroxide. Analysis by means of direct dissolution of cellulosics in DMAc / LiCl (8 %) and SEC indicate that the strength of the TCF pulp is preserved. This is because the cellulose depolymerisation taking place in the various ozone stages is uniform within the fibres. Replacement of chlorine-based bleaching agents with oxygen, hydrogen peroxide and ozone allows for substantial savings on caustic soda in the sequence. In fact, in the absence of chloride ions, oxidised white liquor can be used as an alkali source and recycled in the kraft process with the alkaline bleaching effluent. Although effluent recycling induces an overconsumption of ozone, results presented here show that this may be the most cost-effective scenario. La transition vers des séquences de blanchiment TCF sera nécessaire et est aujourd’hui déjà rendue possible par le remplacement total du dioxyde de chlore par l’ozone, un oxydant plus vert et plus puissant. Il a été montré dans cette thèse qu’une pâte TCF ozone peut atteindre une blancheur et des propriétés mécaniques équivalents à celles d’une pâte ECF conventionnelle. De plus, une étude par spectroscopie UV Raman à résonance a montré la supériorité de l’ozone (associé au peroxyde d’hydrogène) en stabilisation de blancheur, comparée à l’utilisation conjointe de dioxyde de chlore et de peroxide. Une analyse par dissolution directe de la cellulose dans un mélange DMAc / LiCl (8 %) et chromatographie d'exclusion stérique a indiqué que la qualité mécanique de la pâte TCF a été préservée car la dégradation de la cellulose par les différents stades à l’ozone est uniforme dans les fibres. Le remplacement d’agents de blanchiment à base de chlore par des produits sans chlore tels que l’oxygène, le peroxyde d’hydrogène et l’ozone permet d’importantes économies en soude dans la séquence vu que de la liqueur blanche oxydée peut être utilisée en tant qu’agent alcalin dans une boucle de recyclage des effluents de blanchiment. Les résultats présentés ici montrent que la surconsommation en ozone induite par le recyclage est loin de contrebalancer le gain économique apporté par l’utilisation de liqueur blanche oxydée et ouvre la voie au développement de séquences de blanchiment TCF hautement compétitives pour la production de pâte kraft blanchie
