International audienceIn his Epigrams, Martial often has someone use a word whose meaning does not fit with what it designates. The epigrammatist then underlines this inadequacy by suggesting either another word or a change of referent. But he may also maintain both word and referent by playing on different meanings of the word or by showing how absurd the consequences of this association prove to be. We propose to call this kind of poems "definitory epigrams". The aim of our paper is to provide a typology of those epigrams, focusing on the many variations that can be found in the books of Martial and linking them with the structure of the poems and with the kind of point they feature.Dans ses Épigrammes, Martial met souvent dans la bouche ...
