Il conviendra, par la suite, de démontrer dans quelle mesure coexiste en Irlande, depuis la fin du XIXème siècle, deux nationalismes diamétralement opposés : l'un, « supranational » et s'apparentant à l'unionisme ; l'autre, autonomiste (sous une forme fédéraliste ou abrogationniste) ou séparatiste et de nature « autochtone »
