Henry of Ghent on esse

Our purpose here is to analyse Henry's ontology, theory of being and essence and to interpret its position in the Western history of philosophy, especially with reference to Aquinas' ontology. The analysis proceeds as follows: 1) The ambiguities of some terms which mean being: the ambiguity of "être" which means "to be" and "l'être" which means "a being", that of "être" and "exister", and that of "être" and "essence". 2) Why do we choose the ontology of Henry of Ghent?: the ontology of Thomas Aquinas, his esse and Aristotle's on, his esse and existere, and Henry's destruction of Aquinas' esse. 3) Henry's ontology: esse complexum and esse incomplexum, esse essentiae and esse existentiae, res as the most fundamental concept of his ontology. In short Henry not only divided esse into complexum and incomplexum, but also esse incomplexum into esse essentiae and esse existentiae. Aquinas also accepted the first division, but not the second division. This means that the full meaning of Aquinas' esse began to be destroyed immediately after his death and since Henry's destruction it has been forgotten in the Western history of philosophy
