the Association for Asian Studies, the European Associations for Asian Studies and the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS)In 1945, the French attempted to reassert their sovereignty in Indochina thanks to currency. In agreement with the new French imperial policy, which sought to be generous with the Empire, the French thus decided to fix the exchange parity of the piastre- the Indo-Chinese currency- at 17 Francs. This parity, however, did not match with the real economic situation of thecolony and a large-scale exchange control was set up in order to maintain the official exchange rate . This measure, aiming at controlling movements of capital, enables the historian to analyse how the diverse Indo-Chinese diasporas work.With the help of judicial, administrative, and police archives, as well as testimonies, I intend to study successively the financial strategies of the Chinese and Indian diasporas. The main problematics of this paper are : 1 – regarding historical sciences : the way colonised people cunningly scoff at the laws set by the colonisers. How and why did these groups succeed in bypassing the exchange control ?2 – regarding economics : a reflexion on Alternative Remittance Systems and the way these questions are nowadays studied.The two national groups seem to betray characteristic attitudes. Yet, in each of them, some citizens simply wanted to flee Indochina, while others speculated on the piastre. The Chinese and Indians, however, resort to very different devices. Thus, some of the Indians use their particular juridical position ( Pondichery citizens... ) when other try to take some benefits of the diplomatic interplay between the newly independent India and France. It made possible huge conveyances of money since they were supported by their legations or protected by some sort of immunitie.The Chinese seem on the contrary to have relied on ‘informal' (from a Western point of view) and family networks. Their trafficking thus more easily escaping French control. Yet trafficking was not an easy task because China, together with its diasporas, found itself in a great political turmoil so that the traditional circulations of money were seized up as a result. What was the modus operandi of these networks ? If the piastres' trade was struck of illegality, it seems that it were the systems, if not all directly the traditional Community institutions, which were used as support for the traffic. In a way, the Chinese use some sort of « gray compradores ».Lorsqu'en 1945 ils tentèrent de reprendre pied en Indochine , les Français , bien mal équipés , tentèrent cependant de réaffirmer leur souveraineté au moyen de la monnaie . En accord par ailleurs avec la nouvelle politique impériale française , qui se voulait généreuse avec l'Empire , les Français décidèrent ainsi de fixer la parité de la piastre – la monnaie indochinoise – à 17 FF pour une piastre. Cette parité n'était cependant guère en rapport avec la situation économique réelle de la colonie et pour la maintenir il fut décidé d'installer un important contrôle des changes indochinoises. A l'aide d'archives judiciaire , policières , administratives , de témoignages etc... je me propose d'étudier successivement les stratégies financières des diasporas chinoises et indiennes , ainsi que de certains vietnamiens. La problématique générale de cette communication s'inscrirait dans celle développée depuis les années 90 , étudiant l'habileté des peuples dominés à se jouer des règles du colonisateur. Par quels moyens ces groupes parvinrent ils à contourner la barrière du contrôle des changes et dans quel but ?Les 2 groupes ont des comportements assez typés. Certes , on retrouve dans chacun d'eux des éléments cherchant simplement à fuir l'Indochine , tandis que d'autres spéculaient sur la piastre – la répartition entre ces deux motivation ne pouvant être précisément déterminée. Pour le reste cependant , Chinois et Indiens recourent à des circuits très différenciés . Les Indiens exploitent ainsi la particularité de leur position juridique ( ressortissants de Pondichéry ) et le jeu diplomatique auquel se livraient alors l'Inde , nouvellement indépendante , et la France pour opérer d'importants transferts avec le soutien de leur légation ou en profitant de leur immunité. Les Chinois semblent eux s'être appuyés au contraire sur les réseaux informels ( d'un point de vue occidental ) familiaux etc. , leurs trafics échappant ainsi plus facilement au contrôle français. Cette facilité des trafics devrait cependant être nuancée car l'agitation qui atteinte alors la Chine s'étend à ses diasporas et les circuits traditionnels se grippent en raison des événements politiques
