Southern Togo and Benin, located in the Guinea gulf in West Africa, are characterized by a subequatorialclimate with two wet seasons and two dry seasons. The agricultural calendars depend on the seasonal alternance and on time division, which used to be based on religious practices and moon cycles. The most important events of the religious calendar (religious festivals) occur during the dry seasons, at times for sowing and harvesting millet - today replaced by corn. As theharvest's success depends on rain regularity, some divinities are invoked to limit climatic disturbances. The alternance of two rainy seasons may have facilitated corn diffusion at the expense of millet and sorghum. This hypothesis highlights farmers' innovation abilities...
