The open air Magdalenian site of Rocher de la Caille (Loire), excavated from 1970 to 1982, was a hunting camp situated slightly upstream from a ford in the Loire. It was not however, a simple hunting stand, as it has yielded the remains of a flint-knapping workshop, engraved schist plaquettes and of small containers with engraved notches and reticulated decorations. These containers were manufactured in steatite (or talc) whose closest known source is 50 to 80 km distant.
