Sir Arnold Theiler KCMG (March 26, 1867 – July 24, 1936) is considered to be the father of veterinary science in South Africa. He was born in Frick, Switzerland. He emigrated to the South African Republic (ZAR) in 1891. Theiler was the first Director of the Onderstepoort Veterinary Research Institute, Pretoria. Under his leadership research was done on African horse sickness, sleeping sickness, malaria, East Coast fever (Theileria parva) and tick-borne diseases such as redwater, heartwater and biliary.
