The development of psychiatry in France has a strongly territorial aspect, with a shift from the large asylums of the XIXth century to the 'sectorisation' policy that implemented deinstitutionalization (e.g. the closure of beds and the opening of new community-based structures) in a territorial framework. The development of community-based mental health care in the wake of deinstitutionalization has been a process with many geographical implications. Although there has been a strong spatial dimension to mental health policy in the country, the geography of French psychiatric care is relatively under-researched, compared with other western countries.
