In Southern Syria, the remarkable preservation of remains and their good legibility on the surface have allowed us to locate and record settlements, sometimes over large areas. The excavations and explorations have made it possible to plot around fifty plans of sites dated between the 4th and 2nd millennia BC. This region is in effect a veritable museum of proto-historic architectural structures, probably unique in the world. This article limits itself to a general description of the forms of domestic habitat and of the organisation of settlements, and does not approach the questions of the development of landscapes around the sites (principally the hydraulic works), monumental buildings or fortification techniques.
