International audiencePoitou is located between the Paris Basin and the Aquitaine Basin, flanked by the extensions of the Massif Central and the Armorican Massif, and contains many sites attributable to what has been termed in Western Europe, the Acheulean material culture. In this geographic zone, as in the whole of the Poitou‐Charentes region, research into this phase of the Middle Pleistocene was limited to gathering objects from the surface of fields and open sandquarries situated on alluvial terraces, particularly in Charentes, and further north, at the border of the Centre region, in the Creuse alluviums.
