This thesis attempts to identify some of the fundamental mechanisms involved in the modification of soil properties and conditions due to pile installation. Pile behaviour is dependent on soil conditions during pile loading, and at that stage the soil properties existing prior to pile installation have experienced some important changes. Pile design methods, pile installation and the effects of pile installation are critically reviewed with a summary of all factors controlling the behaviour of bored piles. Different experimental techniques are used to study local changes in soil conditions.
