Energy efficiency (EE) is a key design criterion for the next generation of communication systems. Equally, cooperative communication is known to be very effective for enhancing the performance of such systems. This paper proposes a breakthrough approach for maximizing the EE of multiple-inputmultiple- output (MIMO) relay-based nonregenerative cooperative communication systems by optimizing both the source and relay precoders when both relay and direct links are considered.
