This study was undertaken to obtain information on the current and future development of psychiatric nursing in the community. The literature shows that mental illness was not recognised as a separate medical specialty until the nineteenth century, and that consequently the development of the companion specialty of psychiatric nursing is also of recent origin. As a result of changes in treatment patterns and in the legislation concerned with this type of illness psychiatric nursing services began to be offered to patients outside hospital.
