Objective: Research has established that providing care for a person with dementia may have a negative influence on carer psychological wellbeing and carers may experience caregiving-related burden. The stress process model has been applied to carers and research has found significant associations between coping strategies and carer burden. Self-compassion has been described as being kind towards oneself when experiencing suffering or inadequacy. Initial research has found that self-compassion may have a positive influence on psychological wellbeing, and research has investigated the relationships between self-compassion, coping strategies and carer burden in carers of people with dementia.
