Chez l’homme éveillé l’activation des muscles des voies aériennes supérieures (VAS) et du diaphragme est essentielle pour maintenir ouvertes les VAS pendant l’inspiration. La diminution ou la perte du tonus des muscles des VAS entraîne l’obstruction supraglottique. Dans une première étude, pendant la ventilation à pression négative par poumon d’acier, nous avons précisé le mécanisme responsable de l’obstruction des VAS ainsi que le site de l’obstruction. Nous avons ainsi montré chez des sujets en bonne santé que la relaxation musculaire entraîne soit la fermeture de la glotte, soit une obstruction supraglottique.
