Excluding diversity through intersectional borderings. Politics, policies and everyday experiences in Europe and beyond

Building on the notion of intersectional borderings, this book examines how discourses and policies target and exclude migrants and their families in Europe and beyond along racial, gender and sexuality lines. This is observed through specific normative constructions of family, gender and sexuality, and how these exclusions are experienced and resisted by migrants and their families. The book brings together various conceptual and methodological approaches from political and social sciences, to develop three lines of analysis. First, it examines how political movements develop exclusionary discourses that connect migration with gender, sexuality and family constructions. Second, it examines the roles of migration, welfare and care policies in bordering intimacy. Third, it brings to the surface the experiences, practices and resistances to everyday intersectional bordering. This book strives to expand and deepen current academic discussions on so-called “populism” and the politics of exclusion, by firmly connecting them with the politicisation of intimacy and family life. It will appeal to students, academics and policy makers, with its collection of diverse case studies from Europe, North and South America, and South Africa, and it will help informing future mobilizations against increasingly discriminatory and exclusionary tendencies in politics and society
