Abstract: Jaroslav Vrchlický, one of the most important Czech poets and translators of the last third of the 19th century, exchanged letters with many Czech and foreign personalities. Deposited in the Literary Archive of the Museum of Czech Literature in Prague, a part of his correspondence is in French. My aim is to discuss the French correspondence with regard to the historical context. I discuss the Czech international relations - primarily with France - in relation to the Czech National Revival and the emancipation of the Czech nation in 1848-1914. Further on, I consider the relevant personal and professional acquaintances of Jaroslav Vrchlický throughout his life.
