The key to success for any corporation lS high-quality managers. Specialised publications frequently distinguish between so called generalists (i.e. generally trained managers) and specialists for a particular type of management (also referred to as 'knowledge managers'). In my opinion, the most important is to look at what different types of managers share (irrespective ofthe position in the management they hold in the company), rather than at what are the differences between them. First, my paper looks at the general pre-requisites necessary to hold management positions. Then I describe the most important management theories as well as management styles which are applied at present in human resources management
