Václav Černý. The intellectual in the time of normalization

In my thesis I attempted to portray the career of professor Václav Černý. Václav Černý was a significant czech scientist and schoolmaster of The Faculty of Arts of The Charles University. During his life he encountered the totalitarian power, whether the nazists or communists. In the title of my thesis I labeled Václav Čeřný as an intellectual. By the term I understand a scholar who is interested in the general questions and if necessary he or she is willing to involve him/herself in the in the struggle for enforcement of the truth and liberty. The crux of my thesis is illustration of the life of Václav Černý in the time of normalization in Czechoslovakia. In 1970 there started the propaganda against him and he was chosen as a main target of its attack. In the thesis I tried to find an answer for why just he was chosen for it. I also looked for the answer how he replied to the conditions when czech culture, especially literature was under controll of the totalitarian power and a large part of bookmen and scientist could not publish their works
