Saint Petersburg in works of A. S. Pushkin and F. M. Dostoevsky

The Bachelor Thesis deals with the image of a city in the literature. Specifically, it analyses the conception of Saint Petersburg in a narrative poem The Bronze Horseman written by Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin and a novel Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky. The thesis is divided into two parts - the theoretical and practical ones. The theoretical section focuses on the topic of urbanism in the literature in general. It concerns with the main key motifs, space-time continuum and general character types. Then the brief history of Saint Petersburg with the special concentration on the 19th century is mentioned. In the practical section the analysis of both literary works is accomplished. On its base these two pieces of work are compared finally. The goal of the thesis was to find some facts these two literary works, in which portrait of Saint Petersburg is depicted, have in common and on the other hand to examine some differing points. It turned out, that The Bronze Horseman and Crime and Punishment, works so different for the cursory check, have a lot of facts in common
