Our brain consists of several cell types, where astrocytes and neurons are the most abundant ones. Neurons are electrically excitable cells with fundamental roles in multiple brain functions, such as sleep and circadian control, and have been perceived as the key cell in our nervous system. Astrocytes, on the other hand, have been identified as mere supporting cells with passive homeostatic roles such as providing neurons with nutrients, clearing excess neurotransmitters and maintaining the water and extracellular ion balance.
