Synaptic plasticity relies on well-characterized activity-driven changes in gene expression. However, the mechanisms of neuronal activity-driven changes in alternative splicing and polyadenylation are understudied. Here, we investigate the mechanism of expression for alternative polyadenylation isoform Homer1a, an immediate early gene essential to several forms of synaptic plasticity. We demonstrate that neuronal stimulation depletes U1 snRNP, a critical splice factor, from Homer1 pre-mRNA and that this depletion is sufficient for Homer1a expression.
