Interview of John Quigley by Kevlin Haire

Remote interview conducted at The Ohio State University Archives, Columbus, Ohio.In an interview, Professor John Quigley describes his decades-long career as a faculty member of the College of Law at Ohio State. After earning both a law degree and master's degree from Harvard College, Quigley spent a year in the United States-USSR Exchange Program for Graduate Scholars in Moscow, then two years as a research fellow at Harvard examining the Soviet Union's foreign trade system. Because of these experiences, Quigley was recruited in 1969 by Ohio State to teach in East European Studies, Political Science, and in the College of Law, where he eventually taught full-time. Quigley discusses a variety of experiences in the interview: sponsoring student trips to Communist China and the Soviet Union; consulting on various international human rights cases, including charges of genocide in Cambodia and the Balkans; and representing students and others on campus in various civil rights cases, including anti-war activists and members of the Gay Alliance, for which he also served as a faculty advisor. In 1995, the University honored him with the Distinguished Scholar Award, and although he officially retired in 2013, he continues to teach
