Pitinum Pisaurense was located in northern inland part of Marche (near to present-day town of Macerata Feltria). The Roman municipium was known since Renaissance mostly via its inclusion in the text of Pliny the Elder and from chance finds (especially from inscriptions). Proper archaeological research began in 1970 but the urban planning and even the limits of this municipality are still unknown. In June 2013, a new series of excavation campaigns began in the archaeological area. The trenches were positioned based on the geophysical survey undertaken in 2012, which seemed to identify parts of the urban structures.
