It is proposed that the original outcome of Ge,i, J in Spanish is /dʒ/ and not /ɟ/, as generally believed. In fact, typological comparison shows that the change /dʒ/ > /ɟ/ before palatal vowels is more common than the inverse. Romance comparison teaches us that the normal outcome of Ge,i, J in western Romance is /dʒ/. Internal comparison reveals that /dʒ/ is the starting point that best explains the diffraction of Spanish outcomes (juego, yema, arcilla)
