Dynamique climatique côtière en région Antarctique au cours des 50 000 dernières années

The global warming observed since the beginning of the last century, and mostly attributed to the significant greenhouse gases release produced by anthropogenic activities, induces different responses of the Earth climatic system. Forecasting of the future climate evolution requires the use of models where the reliability partly depends on tests that should be performed under various boundary conditions. In order to constrain the poorly-known parameters of these models, a well-adapted method is to conduct investigations on past climates. The TALDICE ice drilling project takes place within this general context. Its main objective aims for the improvement of our knowledge of the past climate variability recorded on the Antarctic continent, more particularly focusing on regional discrepancies and on the behavior of sites located at the edge of the East-Antarctic plateau, notably during rapid climatic variations. The deep ice drilling TALDICE project was conducted in Talos Dome in the Victoria Lands, close to the Ross Sea. In the course of this PhD work, we concentrated on the building of an accurate age scale for the TALDICE ice core, first based on methane and air isotopes measurements performed on the air contained in bubbles trapped inside the ice, and then from the use of various dating models, including a new inverse method which maximizes the consistency between stratigraphic markers and glaciological constraints. The TALDICE-1 age scale then created has enabled us 1) to show that the ice core climate record was usable without hiatus down to an age of 250.000 years before present-day, 2) to discuss the phase relationships between rapid climatic events recorded during the last deglaciation and the end of the last glacial period (Marine isotopic stage n°3) between TALDICE and other ice cores originally from both hemispheres. A multi-proxy analysis, completed with the use of simulations performed with a global atmosphere-ocean coupled climate model (the IPSL-CM4 model), has enabled us to come to the conclusion that 1) the TALDICE climate signal was synchronous with those observed in other Antarctic regions during rapid temperature fluctuations, extending by this way the imprint of the bipolar seesaw mechanism during such rapid variations, 2) regional discrepancies of the amplitude of temperature changes can be noticed between the different Southern Ocean sectors, probably relying on local variations of the sea-ice cover and of the intensity and location of zonal winds. We conclude that a greater sensitivity of the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean can be observed during global temperature changes, compared with the Indian sector.Le réchauffement climatique enregistré depuis le début du siècle, et imputé en grande partie à la production massive de gaz à effets de serre par les activités anthropiques, se traduit par différentes réponses du système climatique terrestre. Les projections pour l'évolution climatique future requièrent l'utilisation de modèles, dont la fiabilité dépend en partie des tests conduisibles sous des conditions aux limites variables. Afin de contraindre les paramètres mal connus de ces modèles, l'étude des climats du passé constitue un moyen adapté. Le projet TALDICE de forage dans la glace prend place dans ce contexte général. Son objectif principal vise à enrichir notre connaissance de la variabilité climatique passée enregistrée sur le continent antarctique, en focalisant plus particulièrement sur les disparités régionales et le comportement des régions situées en bordure du plateau est-antarctique, notamment lors de variations rapides du climat. Le forage glaciaire profond TALDICE a été conduit à Talos Dome, en Terre de Victoria, près de la Mer de Ross. Dans ce travail de thèse nous nous sommes attelés à la construction d'une échelle d‘âge précise pour la carotte TALDICE, en nous appuyant, dans un premier temps, sur l'analyse du méthane et des isotopes de l'air contenu dans les bulles incluses au sein de la matrice glaciaire, et dans un second temps, sur l'utilisation de divers modèles de datation, dont une nouvelle méthode inverse optimisant la cohérence entre les marqueurs stratigraphiques et les contraintes glaciologiques. L'échelle d'âge TALDICE-1 ainsi édifiée a permis 1) de montrer que l'enregistrement climatique de la carotte était exploitable sans hiatus jusqu'à un âge de 250.000 ans avant notre ère, 2) de discuter les relations de phase des évènements climatiques rapides observés durant la dernière déglaciation et la fin de la période glaciaire (stade isotopique marin n°3) entre TALDICE et d'autres carottes de glace issues des deux hémisphères. Une analyse multi-proxies, accompagnéee par l'exploitation de simulations d'un modèle de climat global couplé océan-atmosphère (le modèle IPSL-CM4), nous a permis de conclure 1) à la synchronicité du signal climatique de TALDICE avec ceux des autres régions antarctiques lors des variations rapides de température, étendant ainsi à cette région l'empreinte du mécanisme de bascule bipolaire lors des variations climatiques rapides, 2) à l'observation de disparités régionales dans les taux de changement de la température entre les différents secteurs de l'Océan Austral, probablement gouvernées par des variations locales du couvert de glace de mer, ainsi que de l'intensité et de la localisation des vents zonaux. Nous concluons à une sensibilité accrue du secteur atlantique de l'Océan Austral lors des variations globales de température par rapport au secteur indien
