Sea level rise is a major consequence of climate change and is expected to threaten many low-lying and highly populated areas in the world. However, our understanding of the potential consequences of this phenomenon is limited by (1) the availability of validated sea level time series at regional scales, and more importantly, (2) a relatively poor understanding of the causes of long term coastal geomorphological changes. In some regions, the rate of sea level rise is up to 3 times the global mean rate (estimated as 3.5 mm per year since the early 1990s); in other regions, the rate is slower than the global mean and sea level may even be falling.
