Situación del cultivo de maíz en Guatemala: principales limitaciones en la productividad

Corn (Zea mays L.) is the most important crop in Guatemala because it has an important role in the diet of the population. The production does not cover the national demand, especially yellow corn, seeing the need to import this cereal. Currently, the productivity of the crop is quite low, due to a series of limitations faced by small producers. The national average yield is 2,154 kg ha-1, which is lower than other corn producers in the region. Corn is usually planted under the rainy regime, however, the negative effect of the weather affects national production. Pests and diseases are another problem faced by producers, who often have limited access to the most important production inputs such as fertilizers, seeds, and pesticides. The use of improved seeds is the key to increase productivity. The Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology (ICTA) has generated varieties and hybrids of corn adapted to the productive systems of the country. Unfortunately, these technologies have not been disseminated to most farmers due to the lack of a promotion and adoption strategy, despite significant efforts being made in the country. ICTA has made new hybrids available to the public, such as ICTA HB-17TMA (white grain) and ICTA Grano de Oro (yellow grain). These cultivars have resistance to the Tar Spot Complex. Besides, the Institute has released ICTA HB-18ACP + Zn, the first biofortified hybrid in the world, which has high quality protein and high zinc content.El maíz (Zea mays L.) es el cultivo más importante para Guatemala, debido a que es parte importante en la dieta alimenticia de su población. La producción no cubre la demanda nacional, en especial el maíz amarillo, viéndose en la necesidad de importar este cereal. Actualmente, la productividad del cultivo es bastante baja, debido a una serie de limitantes que afrontan los pequeños productores. El rendimiento promedio nacional es de 2,154 kg ha-1, es bastante bajo comparado con el de los mayores productores del mundo. En general, el maíz se siembra bajo el régimen de lluvias, sin embargo, el efecto negativo del clima afecta la producción nacional. Las plagas y enfermedades es otro problema que afrontan los productores, que muchas veces tienen acceso limitado a los insumos de producción más importantes como fertilizantes, semilla y pesticidas. El uso de semillas mejoradas y el acceso a ellas son clave para contribuir al aumento de la productividad. El Instituto de Ciencia y Tecnología Agrícolas (ICTA) ha generado variedades e híbridos de maíz adaptados a los sistemas productivos del país. Lastimosamente, estas tecnologías no han sido diseminadas a los más necesitados por falta de una estrategia de promoción y adopción, a pesar de que se hacen esfuerzos significativos ante la falta de presupuesto del Gobierno. El ICTA ha puesto a disposición del público nuevos híbridos como el ICTA HB-17TMA (grano blanco), ICTA Grano de Oro (grano amarillo), estos cultivares poseen resistencia al Complejo Mancha de Asfalto; también, liberó ICTA HB-18ACP + Zn, el primer hibrido biofortificado del mundo, el cual posee alta calidad de proteína y mayor contenido de zinc
