Extensive cryptocrystalline mag-nesite veins and stock-work are widespread in the ser-pentinite sole of the New Caledonia ophiolite. Silica is systematically associated with magnesite. It is commonly admitted that Mg and Si are released during the laterization of overlying peridotites.
