International audiencePrecise knowledge of the plasma density gradient created by an intense laser field at the surface of a solid is essential for understanding and controlling the resulting laser-plasma interaction. We present a novel experimental method for determining the scale length of such a gradient in a single shot, based on the spectral analysis of coherent wake emission by a laser-induced solid density plasma, using an analytical model of this emission process. We illustrate this approach in a pump-probe experiment, where it is used to measure the expansion velocity of a plasma into a vacuum
