1H and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy allows to detect and to measure in vivo and non-invasively the concentrations of biologically relevant compounds associated to metabolic processes such as neurotransmission (glutamate, GABA), neuronal and glial density (N-acetyl-aspartate, myo-inositol) and energetic metabolism (phosphocreatine, ATP) among others. Knowledge of the biochemical profile provides a mean to evaluate the metabolic state of the brain in pathological cases or in evolving physiological conditions, such as aging.
