In Madagascar, a genetic improvement programme was conducted for fast-growing eucalypts in open pollinated seed orchards, which constitute the breeding population. Long-term genetic gain and maintenance of genetic diversity will be achieved if reproduction is based on panmictic conditions. However, the typically low domestication of the forest species and the natural environmental conditions could lead to phenotypic variability, with likely consequences for tree phenology.
