Whole-plant biomass growth can be decreased by many abiotic stresses, including water deficit and shading. Two experiments were performed on potted plants of one grapevine cultivar (Vitis vinifera L. cv. Syrah) subjected to watering and shading treatments. Under water stress, plants reduced their primary and secondary axis leaf production rate, whereas secondary axis budburst was relatively unaffected.
