One way to protect electrical installation from over-current is the use of fuse. The fuses of Ferraz Shawmut are filled with sand to enhance the extinction of the electrical arc due to overcurrent. Optimize the sand grains arrangement by vibration improve the fuses properties. A protocol was settled to build reproducible reference packings which are submitted to vertical sinusoidal vibration. The kind of motion exhibited by the sand grains and the packing fraction are studied as a function of both the frequency and the dimensionless acceleration.
