When it comes to global illumination, the computer graphics community is divided into two parts. The first studies the application of a well-known theory in the physics community (radiosity) which tries to find an equilibrium state of thermal transfers between a set of surfaces. When used to compute digital pictures, the quantities transfered are no longer thermic but still electromagnetic waves: the light. More recently, a new way of investigation has appeared, based on statistical mathematical principles (Monte Carlo methods),in order to compute pictures using a ray-tracing algorithm (the rendering equation) and a numerical solution (path-tracing).
