Background: Inflammatory cytokines have been related to the development of adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), shock, and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). We tested the hypothesis that unfavorable outcome in patients with ARDS is related to the presence of a persistent inflammatory response.
