Vide-Poche, un archipel toponymique inédit en Amérique du Nord

Locating and relating places named Vide-Poche uncovers a yet unnoticed onomastic archipelago in North America. Nine places known as Vide-Poche span a wide geographic area, suggesting the likelihood of a former generic function. Although use of Vide-Poche as a place name spread along waterways from the St. Lawrence to the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, this practice has only attracted local, narrow or anecdotal attention. The motivation behind each place named Vide-Poche finds partial explanation in a comparative study. The occurrence (ca 1650) of the same place name in Charente, France, hints at an ancient phenomenon. This article investigates the lexicographic context of the toponym and aims at extracting the conditions that determined its diffusion and/or repeated inception.Le repérage et la mise en relation de lieux appelés Vide-Poche dessinent un archipel nord-américain inédit. Ce nom revendique neuf lieux et une large distribution qui invitent à lui supposer une ancienne fonction générique dans la vallée laurentienne. Le toponyme Vide-Poche a essaimé jusqu’aux fleuves Mississippi et Missouri, mais n’a jamais reçu qu’une attention locale, étroite ou anecdotique. La motivation à l’origine de chaque Vide-Poche trouve un début d’explication dans leur étude comparée. L’attestation du même toponyme en Charente (ca 1650) ouvre sur une profondeur historique insoupçonnée.
