Enhancing the level of knowledge of mothers regarding nutrition through health education intervention

This study utilized the quasi-experimental research design specifically the non-equivalent pretest and post-test and a control survey in order to measure the effect of health education intervention on the level of knowledge of mothers regarding nutrition. The respondents of the study aged 20-45 years old were randomly selected using the criteria set. The random selection of respondents was done in Sitio De Fuego, Barangay San Francisco, General Trias, Cavite for the treatment group and in Sitio Kiko, Barangay San Francisco, General Trias for the control group. The following research instruments were used for data gathering: Information Sheet as a source of the profile of the respondents, Teaching Module as a source of information for the health education intervention questionnaire as a tool to measure the level of knowledge of mothers regarding nutrition, and Brochure entitled “Batang May Kinabukasan, Sa wastong Nutrisyon Simula” as a visual aid. The following conclusions were drawn: 1) Most of the mothers were early to middle adult, reached high school, unemployed, have nuclear family structure, have monthly family income of P5,000 and below, have three (3) children, and professed Catholic; 2) There was high level of knowledge regarding nutrition among mothers in the control and treatment group prior to provision of health education intervention. After the health education intervention, mothers in the treatment group obtained a very high level of knowledge regarding nutrition; 3) There were no significant differences on the level of knowledge of mothers regarding nutrition when grouped according to age, educational attainment, employment status, family structure, month family income, number of children, and religious affiliation; 4) There were no significant differences on the level of knowledge of mothers regarding nutrition before health education intervention between those who were exposed and not exposed to intervention, but there was a significant difference in the level of knowledge of mothers regarding nutrition after health education intervention between those who were exposed and not exposed to intervention. This signifies that the health education intervention was an effective bio-behavioral nursing intervention in improving the level of knowledge of mothers regarding nutrition
