IMPOLITENESS STRATEGIES USED IN PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE OF UNITED STATES 2020

This study focused on the 2020 United States presidential debate. The objectives of this thesis are to identify the impoliteness strategy used by United States presidential candidates in the 2020 presidential debate, to explain how candidates shape these negative cycles, and to identify the types of attacks used by candidates. The candidates of this debate are Donald Trump is the Republican candidate and Joe Biden is the nominee from Democratic party and moderated by Chriss Wallace a news anchor from Fox News. For this research the researcher used theories of impoliteness and negative cycles from Garcia-Pastor (2008) and also types of attack from Culpeper (2005). This research employs qualitative research with descriptive method. The source of this data are video from first presidential debate of United States 2020 and the transcript from the video. In the process of collecting data researcher used documentation techniques by Moleong , while in the process of analyzing data researcher used techniques by Bodgan & Biklen. The results of this study that researcher found are: (1) 194 data are found by the researcher and all of impoliteness strategies are found and used by the candidates, Donald Trump dominantly used both of strategies. (2) all the characteristics of negative cycles are found in several session of debate. Mostly all of the cycles started by the utterance of impoliteness strategies, the power also used by the candidates to dominate the conversations and the cycles itself end up after the moderator undertaken the floor (3) types of attacks that used by the candidates are quality face and social face of the candidates itself
