Analysis of ethical principles and values of higer education establishment

This paper deals with the principles and values of professional ethics, which regulate the professional activities of learning of lecturers and students. It discusses not only the standards of general ethics, but also the academic values such as honesty, academic responsibility, fairness, and respect. Analyzing the scientific literature we can see that ethical principles are based on values. It is emphasized that the actual ethical situation is shaped by the relationships among colleagues and by the fact that in work of lecturers and students important are both personal and professional values that are based on the principles of respect for other people, fairness, decency, exemplarity, and responsibility, which must be observed. The carried out research on lecturers’ and students’ ethical principles and values has revealed that the main priorities of lecturers in professional and pedagogical activities are professional values, and students emphasise values that are characteristic of social and public, rather than of professional relationship. Most of the lecturers and students adhere to the general ethical principles: treatment with respect, non-discrimination on grounds of age, gender, disability and so on, actively expressed intolerance of academic dishonesty, no tolerance of cases of corruption, student knowledge is assessed fairly, etc. The greatest differences in lecturers’ and students’ attitudes to ethical principles are related to seniority and to longer period of studying at a higher education establishment. The longer the seniority and elapsed period of studying, the stronger is adherence to the ethical principles, and greater trust of lecturers in students and students in lecturers
