Culicoides biting midges are small dipterous insects (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) which are known to be vectors of arboviruses, bacteria, protozoan and helminth parasites that can cause disease and mortality in livestock and poultry globally. Detailed knowledge of the Culicoides species composition and biology is essential to assess the risk of the introduction and transmission of pathogens.
