Discussion led by Upstate Writing Project Teacher Consultant: Alicia Kelley, Clemson University Persuasive Writing That Matters: Leading Students in a Community-Based Writing Unit Audience Level: Middle, High Persuasive writing is a key writing genre in South Carolina English courses. But often students struggle to learn these skills outside of a real-world context. Participants at this session will learn how an English I class engaged in community action projects to identify community needs and address them through the scientific method and persuasive techniques. Students demonstrated increased engagement in learning effective persuasion, and several experienced change in their communities as well
