Cjelokupni kralježnički sustav nam omogućuje kretanje te služi kao potporanj trupu pri raznim aktivnostima. Pri određenim aktivnostima (poput teškog fizičkog rada) se mogu pojaviti preopterećenja kralježničkog stupa koja mogu uzrokuju rupture na samim kralježničkim diskovima. Najčešće pogođeno područje degenerativnim promjenama su kralježnički diskovi lumbalnog dijela kralježnice, točnije, lumbalni kralježnički diskovi L4-L5 te L5-S1, jer nose najveću težinu te su uglavnom izloženi značajnom naprezanju i pritisku.
