INTRODUCTION As modern technology widens the range of raw materials which the manufacturer may use for textiles and other products, his selection tends more and more to be made on the basis of fiber quality* This report is designed to present briefly and simply what research has shown us about cotton fiber - - its properties, performance, and production - - and to outline the main gaps that need to be filled in our knowledge. It has been known for a Iong time that the spinning performance of cotton depends upon certain properties such as length, strength, structure, and fineness Within the past few years we have learned a great deal more about each of these properties and how their interrelationships affect yarn and fabric quality* The development of new techniques and machines for rapidly testing fiber properties now make it possible to predict with a high degree of accuracy the spinning performance and other use values of a given cotton
