J.-N. Biraben's retrospective survey to determine population change in France since 1500 is based on the very first civil registration sources. Because of the period under review and the sources employed, a detailed presentation is required, to examine the difficulties encountered and the methodological choices involved. This article also reviews the state of the data collection for the numerical part, which has been completed, and the nominal part, currently under way
