Ideology and Communication Symbolic Reflections of Intellectual Designs

Popular music plays a crucial role in the dissemination of ideologies to the massesby the incorporation of lyrics in to songs. Music can be defined as a social signifier whichdenotes the identity of the individuals by indicating as to what might be right. Musicitself gives an individual identity within a group that comes from belonging to a community.Even though music is not an ideology, music functions just the same as ideologyby allowing individuals to place themselves in to a group that generates the categories of“self and the other”. These identities are mostly shaped by the dominant ideology and itsdiscourse in a certain period of a time. In our post-modern consumption culture, musicserves the globalization ideology by tracing popular trends in a particular of music genrein a certain time. In spite of the essential role of music in maintaining the globalizationideology, it is seen that there are a few of studies that attract attention to the close relationshipbetween music and globalization ideology in the literature. Therefore, arabesquemusic of the 1980s and rap music of the 2000s are selected of being popular music genresin Turkey in order to discover the relationship between globalization ideology and themusic consumption. In the study, arabesque and rap music were reviewed as a productionof music industries in consumption culture from the perspective of Critical Theory, ratherthan rather than being a genre.
