Ağır metaller, çevresel kirleticiler içerisinde yer alırlar ve gıda zinciri yoluyla birikerek sağlığımıza zarar verirler. Bu araştırmada ağır metallerden arseniğin deniz yaşamında çok önemli yeri olan ve gıda zincirinin ilk halkasını oluşturan makroalglerde birikimi ölçülmüştür. Bu amaçla insan gıdası olarak tüketilebilecek ve İzmir Körfezi’nde dağılım gösteren 15 alg türü araştırma materyali olarak belirlenmiştir. Taksonu belirlenen alg türlerinin bir yıl süresince mevsimsel arsenik birikimleri araştırılmıştır. Arseniğin farklı alg gruplarında farklı şekilde (Phaeophyceae> Rhodophyceae ≥ Chlorophyceae) birikim gösterdiği bu araştırma sonucu tespit edilmiştir.
