Effect of fatigue on quality of life in children receiving chemotherapy

Bu çalışma, kemoterapi tedavisi alan çocuklarda yorgunluğun yaşam kalitesine etkisini incelemek amacı ile yapılmış tanımlayıcı tipte bir çalışmadır. Araştırmanın örneklemine Temmuz-Kasım 2019 tarihleri arasında araştırmaya alınma kriterlerine uyan, Ege Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Pediatrik Hematoloji servisi ve polikliniği, Tülay Aktaş Çocuk Onkoloji servisi ve polikliniğinde, yatarak veya ayaktan kemoterapi tedavisi gören 7-12 yaş grubu 53 hasta dahil edilmiştir. Araştırma verileri, Ege Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Klinik Araştırmalar etik kurulu onayı alındıktan sonra "Çocuk Ebeveyn Bilgi Formu", "Çocuk Yorgunluk Ölçeği (24 saat)" ve "7-12 Yaş Arası Pediatrik Onkoloji Hastalarında Yaşam Kalitesi Ölçeği" kullanılarak hastalar ile yüz yüze görüşülerek toplanmıştır. Araştırma verilerinin analizi SPSS 22.0 programında; ortalama, standart sapma, min-max, sayı, yüzde, Spearman korelasyon analizi, bağımlı gruplarda t-testi ve kikare analizi ile değerlendirilmiştir. Araştırmaya katılan çocukların yaş ortalamasının 9.2±2.06 yaş olduğu, %47.2'sinin erkek,%41.5'inin 3.evre (yüksek risk gurubu) olduğu, %62.2'sinin lösemi tanısı ile izlendiği, %62.3'ünün tanısını bildiği saptanmıştır. Kemoterapi tedavisi alan çocukların yorgunluk puan ortalamalarının 22.96±9.68 ve yaşam kalitesi puan ortalamalarının 80.92±18.57 olduğu bulunmuştur. Kemoterapi tedavisi alan çocukların yorgunluk semptomunun hemoglobin ve hemotokrit değeri gibi değişkenlerden etkilendiği (p<.05), hastalık gurubu, evresi, cerrahi tedavi, radyoterapi, kateterinin olması gibi değişkenlerden etkilenmediği ancak hastaların deneyimledikleri yorgunluk semptomu arttıkça yaşam kalitesinin azaldığı gözlemlenmiştir.This descriptive study was conducted to investigate the effect of fatigue on quality of life in children receiving chemotherapy. The study sample included 53 patients in the 7-12 age group who received inpatient or outpatient chemotherapy at the Ege University Medical Faculty Pediatric Hematology inpatient and outpatient clinics, and TülayAktaş Pediatric Oncology inpatient and outpatient clinicsbetween July 2019 and November 2019, and met the inclusion criteria. After the approval of the Ege University Faculty of Medicine Clinical Research Ethics Committee was obtained, the study data were collected using the face-to-face interview technique. The tools used to collect the data were "Child Parent Information Form", "the Fatigue Scale – Child (FS-C) (24 hours)" and "Quality of Life Scale in Pediatric Oncology Patients aged 7-12 Years". The study data were analyzed using the SPSS 22.0 program. For the analysis, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, min-max, numbers, percentages, Spearman correlation analysis, t-test in dependent groups and chi-square analysis were used. The mean age of the children participating in the study was 9.2 ± 2.06 years. Of them, 47.2% were boys, 41.5% were at the 3rd stage of the disease (high-risk group), 62.2% were diagnosed with leukemia, and 62.3% knew what their diagnosis was. The mean score the participating children receiving chemotherapy obtained from the Fatigue Scale – Child, and Quality of Life Scale in Pediatric Oncology Patients were 22.96 ± 9.68 and 80.92 ± 18.57 respectively. It was observed that children receiving chemotherapy treatment were affected by variables such as hemoglobin and hematocrit values (p <.05), but not affected by variables such as disease group, stage of the disease, surgical treatment, radiotherapy, and the presence of the catheter.However, their quality of life decreased as the symptoms of fatigue experienced by them increased
